Alicia Villegas-Rolon is a contemporary artist and teacher. Her work is guided by the process of painting, a marveling of what drawing and painting can still do, and a continued interest in depicting the human figure.
Mrs. Santos, her 2nd grade teacher first recognized her ability to draw and Alicia credits her nurturing and recognition as the origin for becoming an artist as an adult. A shy child and teenager Alicia never thought she would also become a teacher. Teaching has made her a better artist. It has provided her the opportunity to reflect and develop a deeper understanding about the Visual Arts as it applies to everything. She is like many artist who teach; a person between worlds easily navigating between both- artist and teacher- teacher and student. As she always has; easily crossing from one culture to the next. American of Mexican decent. Chicana- raised in-between, hyphenated, mestiza, a child of Mexican immigrant parents growing up in Los Angeles. Alicia married Robert Rolon September of 2017. Both of them grew up in the San Gabriel Valley and studied at Cal States. In the same year they bought a home in Pomona, Ca. and then moved to La Mirada where they live with their rescues, a toy Yorkie named Chewy, a schnauzer mix named Jesse, a Maltese mix named Pomona and two mischievous cats Luna and Nova. Alicia has traveled as far as Cambodia and most recently to Oaxaca. Her favorite cities besides Los Angeles include Mexico City, Guanajuato, Cancun and New Orleans. Since graduating from Cal State University, Fullerton with an MFA in Drawing and Painting in 2017, Alicia has continued to teach and work, adding an additional part time position at Cerritos Community College along with teaching at La Mirada high school. She has exhibited in several local group exhibitions and events and plans on continuing to teach, paint and garden as much as is possible for the rest of her life. |
